Should You Visit a Psychologist for Unbearable Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain often isolates, restricts, and causes a range of negative emotions such as despair, fear, sadness and anger. Even more so when medical exams leave you without any answers. A psychologist might help you! Psychological therapy is aimed at giving you the control back and having a better quality of life.
Let me tell you about Ben;
Ben is a middle-aged man who has a stable job and has a wife and kids. A year ago he started having
  • bouts of chest pains
  • difficulty breathing
  • spells of dizziness
  • a feeling of impending doom.

He has visited the emergency room, but aside from slightly lowered blood sugar levels, no other medical issues were found. Multiple healthcare visits have failed to identify the root cause of his symptoms. In the meantime, he has isolated himself, leaving the house only in the company of certain people, avoiding crowds, and giving up the activities he once loved. He also continues to feel anxious about his health. Feeling alone and afraid, he began seeing a psychologist and undergoing therapy to address his emotions. There, he was diagnosed with Somatic Symptom Disorder, and with the right treatment, he is now able to work again, enjoy the activities he once loved, and has regained the energy to enjoy life.

Somatic Symptom Disorder can initially be misdiagnosed, leaving clients in the dark, searching for answers and relief. This diagnosis is common, so you are not alone in experiencing it. This year, Psyched Aruba has enrolled in a course on Aanhoudende Lichamelijke Klachten (Persistent Physical Complaints) at the prestigious RINO Zuid. We will continue to receive guided professional development (intervisie) from February to July 2024, fulfilling our commitment to providing specialized quality mental health care by our licensed psychologists and therapists.

Our mission and vision

Having an intern is like looking at your company through a fresh set of eyes. Chantel Vlaun, our toegepaste psycholoog io, asked us about our mission and vision, and with that, we started to crystalize what Psyched Aruba stands for and how we would like to achieve this.

What do we aim to achieve?
Our mission is to enhance the mental wellbeing of children, youth, adults and seniors, by providing licensed quality psychological care, including specialized assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, we aim to support the development of aspiring psychologist and therapists and share psychological knowledge by providing education to the society.

How do we plan to achieve this?
To achieve this, we rely on three strategic pillars:
  1. Quality Mental Health Care:
We implement evidence-based practices, adopting a matched care perspective and promoting shared decision-making. Following leading standards in mental health care protocols, backed by research to be effective, from a central point of view of what the client needs are. We focus on the continuous specialized professional development of our licensed psychologists, prioritizing learning through activities such as supervision, intervision, peer consultation, training, courses, and specialized studies to stay on top of the latest developments in the field. We encourage multidisciplinary collaboration, reaching out and facilitating the care for our clients, with their consent, such as general practitioners (huisartsen).
  2. Social Contribution:
We uphold cultural sensitivity in our practice, maintaining respect for our clients' cultural values and norms, and preferences for language. We aim to increase awareness of psychological topics in our society by expanding our media presence through social media platforms, radio and televised programs, blogs, and written articles. Additionally, we focus on research to contribute to the growing body of psychological science.
  3. Academy:
Worldwide, there is a growing need for healthcare professionals, and our community is no exception to this development. Those in need of mental health care are often confronted with long waiting lists and long waiting time, stagnating and overwhelming the healthcare sector. We believe that everyone deserves help when it's needed the most. That's why we offer psychologists a structured apprenticeship program, optimizing the integration of knowledge (theory) and experience (practice) under expert guidance. This way, we aim to contribute to more qualified mental healthcare professionals.

Our mission and vision, strategic pillars and core values are aimed at continually improving the mental healthcare of individuals and our society as a whole, on time, when it's needed the most.
